Si Da Ming Cong

The term Si Da Ming Cong refers specifically to four historically celebrated original bushes that were singled out for their reputation and legacy long before modern cultivar classification became common. These four—Da Hong Pao, Shui Jin Gui, Bai Ji Guan, and Tie Luo Han and they each have their own legend.

Folklore

Tie Luo Han (铁罗汉) is one of the Four Famous Ming Cong teas of the Wuyi Mountains, alongside Da Hong Pao, Bai Ji Guan, and Shui Jin Gui, and is regarded as the oldest among them. Originating during the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty (circa 1782), this legendary yancha is steeped in history and myth. Named after the “Iron Arhat,” Tie Luo Han is associated with tales of healing, devotion, and quiet strength—whether through merchants, monks, or divine legend—embodying the enduring spirit and medicinal depth for which Wuyi teas are revered.

Aromas

The dry leaves are uniform in size and color, presenting a tidy, elegant appearance. The nose reveals the tea’s pronounced roast, with aromas of toasted bread, almost caramelized, accompanied by a subtle hint of sweetness. Once wet, the leaves unfold a more complex bouquet, floral yet with a resinous undertone reminiscent of Chinese Angelica Root.

Flavor

On the palate, the tea is rich and rounded, opening with roasted notes before revealing a gently sweet mid-palate that adds a touch of indulgence. This gives way to the full complexity of this Si Da Ming Cong. The flavor profile revolves around delicate floral and lightly powdery notes, complemented by a whisper of nuts, all supported by a striking minerality. Subtle resinous layers persist, occasionally accompanied by hints of spice, such as clove. The lingering Hui Guan note extends the finish, leaving the mouth feeling clean, fresh, and bright.

This tea invites thoughtful pairing — particularly with a firm, aged hard cheese, like an 18-month Comté. The cheese’s crystalline texture and gentle salinity create a dialogue with the tea, enhancing its rocky minerality while allowing the roasted, resinous depth of the Tie Luo Han to shine.
