My Notes
Gao Cong (高丛)
"A traditional tea-growing method in which tea plants are allowed to grow naturally to full maturity without regular trimming or height control. Gao Cong tea trees develop tall, tree-like structures with deep root systems, often producing teas of greater complexity, depth, and expressive character."
The dry leaves offer aromas reminiscent of cane-sugar caramel, with toasted brioche notes, dried fruit such as apple, and even hints of macadamia nut, creating a comforting impression. A subtle saline touch from the terroir combines with bamboo leaf notes to bring a sense of freshness. In the gaiwan, the wet leaves release a clear, floral aroma that is long-lasting and airy. One can sense an elegant promise, highlighted by an oriental spiced nuance of cinnamon that gave this famous Wuyi tea its name.
On the palate, the tea immediately signals a high level of craftsmanship. It is powerful, yet the tea remains elegant, with a beautiful texture. The liquor is full-bodied and very round, the tannins are well polished, and the mouth turns into a flowery road with every sip. We are in gardenia territory — creamy, rich, yet never ostentatious — finishing on a hint of cinnamon with a lovely natural sweetness.
Powerful yet refined, the tea demonstrates classic Rou Gui character with balance between floral, mineral, and spice notes. Tannins are smooth, the mouthfeel very pleasant, and the finish elegant and persistent.
