My Notes

Si Da Ming Cong

The term Si Da Ming Cong refers specifically to four historically celebrated original bushes that were singled out for their reputation and legacy long before modern cultivar classification became common. These four—Da Hong Pao, Shui Jin Gui, Bai Ji Guan, and Tie Luo Han and they each have their own legend.

After a three-year hiatus, Shui Jin Gui returns in its pure form for the 2024 season, once again showcasing its distinctive qualities. Challenging weather and unforeseen conditions had previously affected its production, leading to blended teas. Now, this beloved rock oolong is back, reflecting its true character.

The dry leaves are rich and oily, some with a frosty sheen, exuding an enticing aroma of caramel and roasted nuts, underpinned by a distinct charcoal-roasted note. Once brewed, the tea reveals a creamy fragrance and its hallmark plum blossom aroma—a delicate, lingering scent that sets Shui Jin Gui apart.

The first infusion carries a light, elegant fragrance reminiscent of winter plum blossoms on a cool breeze. The tea’s flavor unfolds gently, offering depth and a smooth, velvety texture. Subtle notes of plum blossom add complexity, while the aftertaste lingers with sweetness, floral freshness, and a cooling clarity that soothes the palate. Each sip reflects the mountain’s rich terroir and the meticulous care in its crafting. Shui Jin Gui is a tea to be savored slowly, much like a fine cognac, allowing its layered character to emerge across infusions. Its refined profile and lingering aftertaste make it an exceptional choice for contemplative tea moments.
