My Notes

Huangshan Maofeng — qun ti zhong (long-leaf population cultivar). 5g. 100 ml porcelain gaiwan. 90°C water.

Dry leaves are downy, slender, one bud with one leaf just opening, tender yellow-green. The aroma is clean, with an orchid tone woven into a deep-valley vegetation note, faint and elusive, carrying a cool, ethereal quality.

1, Rinse releases the aroma immediately: floral, tender, and bamboo leaf notes together. Entry is soft and sweet, landing on the mid-tongue, light with some body. The aroma is carried in the liquor. No bitterness or astringency.

2, Orchid rises to the palate and nasal cavity, fine and steady. The liquor has substance on the tongue, with a gentle pressing sensation at the mid-tongue. Sweetness moves from the tongue toward the throat. Floral notes and the tender scent from pan-firing stay integrated in the liquor. No detectable roast note.

3, Floral aroma remains at the upper palate and carries into the later part of the sip. The liquor stays sweet and soft. The tongue remains clean. Sweetness returns from the throat, with a light cooling sensation.

4, The body lightens. Orchid remains at the upper palate. The connection between tongue and throat continues, with a persistent clean sweetness. No bitterness or astringency.

5, Leaves open fully, tender yellow-green, even. The infused leaves carry a clean sweetness. Across the infusions, floral notes run through the tea. The liquor stays soft, sweet, with some body, and holds through multiple infusions.

This style of Huangshan Maofeng, made from high-mountain population cultivars and finished slowly over low heat, shows leaves with a yellow-green tone and aroma sitting within the liquor rather than on top. A cooling note stays in the mouth, with sweetness returning over time. The expression is not surface-driven; it carries inward, with depth and substance.
