A Classification by Aroma Types

 

Fenghuang Dancong has long been known for the abundance of its names. The usual way of arranging them is straightforward: first the aromatic types, then the individual bush names listed under each fragrance category. That structure has been used for many years. Here the same foundation remains, but one more element is added: place.

On Fenghuang Mountain (Fènghuáng Shān 凤凰山), a tea tree rarely exists as a name alone. Many of the well-known mother trees are tied to particular slopes, hamlets, or village hillsides—Wudong, Liziping, Da'an, Guantoushe, Zimao, Kengqian, Shitoujiao. These places are not simply geographic references; they are where many of the names first entered local memory.

For that reason, alongside the aromatic types and bush names, this register also records—whenever possible—the places where those trees were noted in village accounts, written sources, or farmers' recollections. The intention is simple: to return the names to the mountain where they belong.

The structure therefore becomes clear:

  • The aroma type : it comes from the fragrance in the cup.
  • The bush name : it refers to a particular tree or a lineage propagated from it.
  • The place : it marks the part of the mountain where the name first appeared.

Fenghuang Mountain is not arranged like a botanical collection. It reads more like an old mountain register, where scent, tree, and ground remain linked across generations.

 

I · Huangzhi Xiang (黄栀香)

gardenia type

Aroma reminiscent of huangzhi hua (黄栀花, gardenia). The fragrance rises quickly in the cup—bright, sweet, and expansive. Liquor usually carries a clear floral lift and a soft sweetness.

Within Fenghuang Dancong, Huangzhi Xiang forms one of the largest fragrance groups. Many historic mother bushes belong to this category, particularly in the high elevations of Wudong Cun (乌岽村).

Night-Blooming Jasmine Fragrance Dancong

Aroma resembling yelai hua (夜来花, night-blooming jasmine / Cestrum nocturnum). The fragrance is rich, slightly oily, and often deepens toward the finish. In traditional descriptions from the Phoenix Mountain tea area, the name is also associated with the floral scent that appears during evening zuoqing (做青) processing.

Chinese Bayberry Fragrance Dancong

Aroma recalling yangmei (杨梅, Chinese bayberry). Unlike the floral fragrance groups, Yangmei Xiang expresses a faint fruit-like aroma with mild sweetness and slight acidity.

Bitter-Leaf Dancong

A group of Dancong bushes traditionally described as ku zhong (苦种, bitter-leaf). Fresh leaves show noticeable bitterness; when processed, the bitterness transforms quickly into sweetness, leaving a thick liquor and long hui gan (回甘, returning sweetness). These trees are often valued for their pronounced shan yun (山韵, mountain resonance).
