Tea varietal: Huang Shan Tu Zhong (Da Ye Zhong)
From the perspective of tree varieties, Huangshan Maofeng is probably the most diverse in the Huangshan region. Maofeng can be made from Da Ye Zhong (large-leaf varieties), Qimen Zhongye varieties, and later cultivated varieties such as Anhui No. 3, Anhui No. 7, Wannong No. 95, Yangshulin No. 783, and Fuzao No. 2. However, in terms of pure taste, the Tu Zhong (local large-leaf variety in Huangshan, also known as the native variety), has the most characteristic taste and aroma of Maofeng. It possesses a distinct and elegant orchid fragrance, a quality that other tree varieties cannot replicate.
This season, we carefully selected a Huangshan Maofeng made with Da Ye Zhong from the core producing area in the Huangshan region. The dry leaves of this Huangshan Maofeng have a color that is close to tender yellow-green, with some describing it as ivory. It is made with one bud and one leaf just beginning to unfold, which provides the best flavor for Maofeng. The tea liquor has a clear yellow hue, and upon tasting, there is a distinct fresh and cool aroma. The orchid fragrance is undoubtedly the most prominent characteristic of this lovely tea.
